- You can join the commandos straight outta school (at 19) and that is fairly hard to get into. You can join the SASR after 5 yrs of the army. The commandos and the SASR are the only special forces we got (as far as i know). Just check it out on the army jobs website.
- join the commandos first and do five years with them then you can try out for the british SAS if you really want to challenge yourself. but remember, special forces are only really suited to single men, there aint no room for family if your being sent into hell holes you might not come out of. also, if its glory your looking for them dont join. in the SAS the public or the government wont pat you on the back, they wont acknowledge you - your a target! special forces is hard work and it takes a special type of person to do it.
- The kind of guys who make it in the SF community are very driven men. Men who require a challenge, and do not have a crack at selection for some half-a*sed reason. The challenges are what drive these men, and are what ultumately these individuals find rewarding. Not the money, not the prestige but the continual stimulation. A good job for the Australian SF? I dont get what you mean. Hard to get in? Well, not exactly like they're going to let clusterf*cks in. And with regards to what the others said.. in theory, it is possible to successfully apply for the SFDRS at 19, however, no one has. A 20 year old has made it. Most successful SFDRS candidates are closer to 25, maybe have a degree, and are very motivated individuals bored with civilian life. Also, the last intakes for SFDRS are being conducted shortly. And, you do not have to wait 5yrs before you can apply for the SASR. You may apply after 2 years.
